چکیده

A 2x2 mixed design experiment (N=52) was conducted to examine the effects of search method and task complexity on users’ information-seeking performance and affective experience in an e-commerce context. The former factor had two within-participants conditions: keyword (KW) vs. natural language (NL) search; the latter factor had two between-participants conditions: simple vs. complex tasks. The results show that participants in the complex task condition were more successful when they used KW search than NL search. They thought the tasks were less difficult and reported more enjoyment and confidence with KW search. In the meantime, simple task participants performed better when they used NL rather than KW search. They also perceived the tasks as easier and more enjoyable, and had higher levels of confidence with the results, when NL was used. The findings suggest that NL search is not the panacea for all information retrieval tasks, depending on the complexity of task. Implications for interface design and directions for future research are discussed.

Task Complexity Manipulation and EFL learners’ interactions in the process of collaborative pre-planning

Today, learners’ interaction and collaborative task performance have attracted increasing attention from language teachers and researchers. The present study investigated whether collaborative pre-planning, task complexity manipulation, and language proficiency level play a role in learners’ interactions. To this end, 128 EFL learners from two different language proficiency levels carried out t...

An Investigation into the Effects of Joint Planning on Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency across Task Complexity

The current study aimed to examine the effects of strategic planning, online planning, strategic planning and online planning combined (joint planning), and no planning on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of oral productions in two simple and complex narrative tasks. Eighty advanced EFL learners performed one simple narrative task and a complex narrative task with 20 minutes in between. Th...

Cognitive Task Complexity and Iranian EFL Learners’ Written Linguistic Performance across Writing Proficiency Levels

Recently tasks, as the basic units of syllabi, and the cognitive complexity, as the criterion for sequencing them, have caught many second language researchers’ attention. This study sought to explore the effect of utilizing the cognitively simple and complex tasks on high- and low-proficient EFL Iranian writers’ linguistic performance, i.e., fluency, accuracy, lexical complexity, and structura...
